Deal Sourcing for Venture Capital Firms and Angel Investors

More pitch decks do not necessarily create better deal flow. Effective sourcing begins with a clear investment thesis and a repeatable qualification process.
Deal volume is not deal quality
VCs and angels are surrounded by databases, demo days, referrals and inbound pitches. The constraint is attention. A sourcing programme should increase the proportion of opportunities that fit the investor’s thesis, not merely increase the number of decks in the inbox.
Make the thesis usable
A practical thesis defines sector, stage, geography, cheque size, ownership ambition, traction expectations, follow-on capacity and the investor’s value-add. It should also state what the investor will not consider. Clear boundaries improve referrals because founders and intermediaries know when an introduction is genuinely relevant.
Combine network and outbound sourcing
Warm referrals remain valuable because they carry context, but they can reproduce the same networks and biases. Targeted outbound research can uncover companies before they begin a formal raise. Partnerships with operators, accelerators, advisers, universities and specialist communities can widen coverage when they are managed as relationships rather than list exchanges.
Screen for the questions that change the decision
The first review should focus on problem importance, market structure, founder insight, evidence of demand, business model, economics, competition, capital requirements and the purpose of the round. At an early stage, certainty is impossible. The objective is to identify which uncertainties are acceptable and which undermine the investment case.
Respect the founder experience
Fast, clear communication strengthens an investor’s reputation and future access. A structured no is better than silence. For opportunities that progress, founders should understand the process, information required, likely timing and who makes the decision.
